Slovenia historical trail holidays
The locations we have selected for our our Slovenia historical trail holidays offer a mix of regional, cultural and historical interest. Starting in the Soca valley to the west of the country, moving to the Skofija Loka Hills just to the west of Ljubljana, and finally exploring one of the oldest towns in Slovenia, Ptuj.
Kobarid is
a small town in the Soca Valley, where you will find an excellent museum
documenting the WWI 'Soca Front' battle. Ernest Hemingway's novel A Farewell
to Arms gives a chilling account of this battle and the terrible loss of
life. Just to the north of Kobarid is the Vrisic Pass, built by Russian
prisoners of war. A chapel, pictured right, is dedicated to the hundreds
who died during its construction. Apart from the historical interest, it
is a stunning mountain pass drive.
Idrija is a town steeped
in the history of mining and lace. You can explore former mercury mines to
museums, castles and restored renaissance buildings. The nearby town of Skofija
Loka is regarded as one of the best preserved medieval
towns in Slovenia, with examples of 16th century burgher houses, priceless
manuscripts, an ancient bridge and Loka Castle overlooking the Old Town.
In the north east of Slovenia is Ptuj, probably the most
complete historical town in Slovenia. You will find well preserved elements
of Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture, as well as
examples of sun god worship from 3AD at the Mithra III Shrine.
