Slovenia Karst holidays
The Karst region of Slovenia is a fascinating area of disappearing lakes, underground caves, wonderful wines and air-cured hams and Lipica is the home of the Lipizzaner Horses made famous by the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.
Cerknica Lake, the ‘disappearing lake’, usually appears between October and June when it becomes a wonderful area for fishing and windsurfing and bird watching, then overnight it just vanishes!
Postojna
Caves and Socjan Caves are well worth visiting: the former are perhaps rather more
touristy and have a small train running through - so you don’t have to
walk too far!
The only cave vertebrate in Europe, the Proteus anguinus or “human fish” which is also the largest known cave animal in the world, lives in Slovene caves.
The Karst area is also famous for its vineyards with
many award winning wines, the local speciality being the rich "teran" reds,
which complement the local air-cured hams and salamis.
The stone houses of the Karst region are quite different to the rest of Slovenia and probably the most picturesque is the medieval hilltop village of Stanjel, which is worth a few hours of exploration.
