Motovun in Istria, Croatia
This
pretty hilltop medieval village with ancient cobbled streets and geraniums
tumbling from windowsills is a little gem.
There are a handful of art galleries and tiny truffle shops – after all, Istria boasts of being one of the best truffle regions in Europe!
Frescos decorate many of the buildings and at the top of the hill you are rewarded with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside and vineyards.
The annual Motovun Film Festival at the end of July draws quite a crowd including, the occasional famous face. Some sights to explore in the area include the city of Pazin, described in Jules Verne's book Mathias Sandorf, and Buzet, the 'City of Truffles'.
