Hills and wine growing regions in Slovenia -
Podravje, Posavje, Karst
Along the southern border of Slovenia you will find fertile, rolling hills. This is a land of sunflowers, corn and vineyards. Then there are the forests to explore - this is one of the most densely forested countries in Europe, rich with wildlife, including bears! These are the areas where most of the vines are grown. Slovenian wine is excellent and wins many awards at international level. There are three main regions: Podravje in the northeast, most famous for its whites; Posavje in the southeast, known for its reds, and you cannot visit the Karst region without trying the ruby-red Teran wine. It is said that the Slovenes keep the best wines for themselves and only export the less good wines - and it is absolutely true! In fact it is quite difficult to find Slovene wine in the UK. All the more reason to follow one of the Wine Routes and sample some of these wonderful wines.
