Julian Alps in Slovenia

The north-west of Slovenia is dominated by dramatic white limestone mountains, the Julian Alps. The highest peak, Mount Triglav, stands at over 2800 metres; Triglav National Park dominates and protects this whole area. The panoramic views from the Vrsic Pass, a high mountain road connecting the Trenta Valley from Bovec to Kranjska Gora, are truly spectacular (the pass closes in winter). It is a landscape of soaring peaks, deep valleys, rivers of crystal clear water, blankets of thick forest, and meadows filled with wild flowers; then in winter it transforms into a snowy winter wonderland. This is an area of crashing waterfalls and beautiful lakes: Lake Bled is the most famous, and nearby is the relatively untouched Lake Bohinj.
