Sports and activities in Slovenia
Fishing
Slovenia
has great fishing in fast alpine rivers and lakes, meadow streams and lower
mountain rivers. Some of the best preserved fishing regions are on the Soca,
Sava, Radnova, Krka and Unec rivers. These rivers
hold carefully maintained and diverse fish stocks. We can organise licences
and guides and advise you of the best places to stay.
Walking
Wherever you are in Slovenia it is possible to discover the natural beauties on foot. The country is covered by countless paths for occasional as well as for enthusiastic hikers, trails through regional parks, circular trails around the towns, cities and lakes and less demanding paths along the rivers, in forests and mountains.
Horse riding
There are excellent riding facilities at ranches and tourist
farms, which similarly to riding centres, also organise riding courses
for all levels, cross-country riding, carriage rides, care for horses
and more. Lipica, the cradle of the Lipizzaner horses, has been offering
a special experience since the 16th century and is an important tourist
centre which offers classical riding courses, and visits to see training
sessions and performances.
Cycling
Slovenia is a wonderful place for cycling; there are cycling paths short and long for tours of varying difficulties. Cycling maps of Slovenia and individual areas are available from tourist information centres in the cities and towns. There has also been an increase in possibilities for mountain cycling. Mountain bikes are available to rent in lots of places and are a great way to get around. Note that bikes are banned from the paths of the Triglav National Park.
Water sports
Slovenia's
rivers, lakes and Adriatic coast offers various water sports, from
traditional boating for relaxation to adrenaline-inducing white-water
rafting over waterfalls and rapids. Kayaking, canoeing, and rafting
outings are possible on many Slovene rivers. Boats are available
for rent on many lakes including Lake Bled and Bohinj. Cerknica Lake
in the Karst region is an amazing natural phenomena of a sometimes
'disappearing lake'. It is a great favourite with windsurfers - when
it has water in it! Yachts and sailboats rental is possible all along
the coast. Proof of sailing qualifications is necessary, but yachts
can also be hired together with an experienced captain.
Golf
For those who like to relax with golf clubs, and wide open spaces, you will be impressed by Slovenia's eight golf courses located amid stunning scenery.
Winter sports
Slovenia has dozens of great ski centres with lifts. The best known ski centre is Kranjska Gora, which hosts an annual World Cup men's downhill competition. The larger ski centres also maintain trails for snowboarding, sledding and cross-country skiing. You can even try snowmobile rides, which are possible in Kranjska Gora, Pohorje, Pokljuka and Krvavec. In some places, tourist rides are offered on dog sleds and horse-drawn sleighs.
Wine routes
Slovene has some excellent wines although they are relatively unknown outside the country. The best way to explore them is by following a wine trail (vinske ceste) through one of the three distinct wine producing regions and stopping at some of the many wine cellars. These routes are signposted throughout the wine regions and will illustrate the entire noble wine-growing and culinary traditions.
Health resorts and spas
The secret of well-being was discovered long ago at Slovenia's thermal and mineral springs. Archeological excavations from the Roman period bear witness to the rich history of thermal baths in Slovenia. Fifteen Slovenian health spa and tourist centres take pride in their certified status as natural health resorts.
